Helix Piercing and Helix Orbital Piercing- What’s the Difference

It is very common to many having their earlobes pierced and one of these two peircings is placed high on the ear. This is called helix piercing and not cartilage piercing as many thought. This is because the entire ear is made-up of cartilage.

Any piercing not on your earlobe is a cartilage piercing, the second and the third holes ascending from the earlobe are cartilage peircings. Helix is the most popular piercing in America next to earlobes. Helix piercing was the first among all industrial piercing. Unfortunately though many got their piercing done in malls using a piercing gun, this could be a dangerous act for you. If you want to have your piercing done, you must seek for a professional help. Go to a professional piercing parlor instead, to be assured of your safety. You will be sure that they are using a sterile and safe needle rather than a piercing gun that is unhygienic and damaging.

Holes pierced with hoop or rings are easier and faster to heal so most probably your piercer will recommend you this first before using the real barbell for your industrials, but of course, the decision is still yours. With the proper care and sanitation, your industrials will heal fast.

You will be asked by your piercer to sit on a chair that is almost similar to a dentist’s chair. He will then mark your ear and will ask you if you are satisfied with the location your piercing will be placed. Then he will push a needle to your helix and you have your piercing done instantly. The pain will only last for seconds. There have been rumors that your hearing, speech, nervous system, balance, etc will be affected. Do not believe it, those are just rumors.

A helix orbital on the other hand has two HELIX piercings that are joined together by a single piece of circular jewelry, hence, the name ORBITAL. This is to differentiate it to an industrial piercing where two holes are joined by a single straight bar called barbell. Helix orbital piercing is more complicated because your piercer needs to measure the distance of the two holes correctly.

Though it may look and feel okay after six months, your piercing is not yet fully healed. Usually cartilage piercing takes a year until it is fully healed. Before changing your jewelry, allow your piercing to heal first. Helix piercing is a great way to express your creativity and individuality.

Navel Piercing During Pregnancy- Remove or Retain?

It’s always been a scare for a pregnant woman that she might loose her belly piercing during her pregnancy due to her expanding belly. Why shouldn’t she be, after a year or two of healing her navel piercing then it will just go to waste? You won’t let that happen right? Around 3 or 4 months during pregnancy, the piercing will start to feel uncomfortable. This is not a problem anymore. With the advancement of medicine and technology, there are many options for preserving a piercing all throughout the childbearing year.

To accommodate the expanding abdomen; you must consider the flexibility, method of fastening, gauge, weight, length of barbell, and type of material you wear through your piercing. There are several types that are recommended for pregnant women.

As soon as a pregnant woman feels uncomfortable, normally during her third or fourth month of her pregnancy, she can immediately change her regular jewelry for a long curved barbell. As the belly expands the long barbell allows more room for the skin to stretch.

If metal barbells starts to feel uncomfortable because of its weight you can switch your metal barbell to an acrylic retainer. Acrylic retainers are lightweight which makes it more comfortable. They come with rubber o-rings to secure the ends or threadable balls. Always choose lightweight materials.

It is better to preserve your piercing throughout your pregnancy than to allow it to close then repiercing it afterwards. When a piercing closed it will develop scar tissues and scar tissues when repierced need more time to heal. Piercing a scar is not also advisable as well as piercers may find it hard to do that.

If a pregnant woman wishes to retain her piercing, she may do so. She just needs a proper care for her piercing. A suitable jewelry and extra skin care to support elasticity of her growing belly, a proper diet, plenty of water and of course long and flexible belly jewelry are all what is needed to preserve the belly piercing. Your proper diet and personal care is also vital for your baby’s good health and development.

Industrial Piercing Jewelry Design and Material

Industrial Piercing or sometimes called as scaffold piercing and construction piercing is any two pierced holes that are connected to each other by a straight bar. These two holes are connected with industrial barbells, typically from the other side of the helix to the other or the counter helix. In case you do not know what helix means, it is the ear cartilage or the rim. Pieces of industrial piercing jewelry are cautiously chosen for your industrials.

The common mistake of many is that they think that industrials are only for the ears but industrials can be done in many other body parts. Industrial barbells for instance can also be used for lip, tongue or belly button piercing. Industrial barbells are straight steel barbells with sphere-shape locks on each end; one side is enclosed while the other can be unscrewed and used as the inserting part to the ears. Some industrial barbells can be unscrewed at both ends and as one wishes, it can be replaced by other customized designs. There are many shapes available like triangles, cones, disk, cubes and cylinders. You can also choose colors that you want. Many manufacturers offer modified accessories for your industrials. Straight barbells are common but one can choose from many variations of designs. For example, instead of a straight and traditional barbell; play a little with your industrials by choosing a spiral barbell, a twist or middle finger, or maybe a diamond shaped surgical steel project bar.

It is best to use industrials made of titanium and surgical steel while on the healing period but once the healing is done, you can change your industrial bars into materials made of silver or gold. In addition, you can also use decorative designs like glass or acrylic. It is still recommended that you first ask advice from your piercer or physician before using other materials as you might be allergic to them. The material for your industrial jewelry has very specific make-up so you must take it into consideration before buying your jewelry. Never go for the design alone. It sure looks cool but be very careful. Choose the design and the material that is right for you, and lastly, take all the safety precautions if you decide to have an industrial piercing.

History of Piercing

Piercing is one of the oldest and most interesting forms of self-adornment. Though it wasn’t really socially accepted in the past, it is now widely accepted in today’s society. Before, people connote piercing with wrong impressions. Body piercing has been around the world since the early civilization. History tells us that it has been practiced by many cultures since then.

Piercing was believed to be an essential part of ancient culture’s physical and spiritual identity. Dated back on 9th century BC, a stone relief from Nimrud was the earliest evidence of body piercing. A 5,000 years old mummified body had an ear pierced in 7-11mm in diameter. This mummy is said to be the oldest recorded piercing.

When you’ll ask this generation, “why do you have to have your body pierced?” To express my individuality, this is the reason you will most likely hear from them. But piercing has their cultural meanings. In India for instance, they usually wear piercing in the left nostril or in some place. Sometimes both nostrils are joined to the ear by a chain.
The left nostril is more common to be pierced because it is associated to Ayuvedra, an Indian form of alternative medicine. They believe that piercing will make child birth easier and would lessen the period of labor.

To facilitate their communication with gods, the Mayan nobleman does ritual tongue piercing and bloodletting while a gold earring worn in the left ear signifies a government official in Tibet. New Guinea warriors wore tusks through the septum for a vicious appearance.

There are many cultural reasons behind body piercing. They may indicate affiliation to a clan or tribe. They may also indicate a social status or ranking in the society or level of success. A leader of a tribe or his family can be identified through body piercing in some culture. Warriors wear piercing to appear threatening. It can also be worn to enhance your sexual stimulation or to become attractive. It may also indicate a formal procedure of passage or a sign of authority. Still, others have piercings with the belief that it will ward off evil and illness.

10 Tips for Body Piercing

Body piercing is simply made by puncturing a part of your body using a needle. A piece of jewelry is inserted into the puncture after the process. It has been popular since ages ago, deemed unnecessary for most in the past, but it has been widely accepted as a form of self-expression in this decade.

Body piercing is prone to a potentially dangerous infection so you must ensure your safety first. We are giving 10 tips for you to consider.

1. Avail only for a professional body piercer.
Do not ever attempt to do the piercing by yourself. You have an increased risk of infection by going to a non-professional piercer. Be sure that your artist is experienced, reputable and reliable. Seek for a professional help for consultation before getting a body piercing.

2. Ask questions.
It is better to be safe than sorry right? So do not hesitate to ask questions and interview your piercer. Your health is in great risk and you don’t want to compromise it, don’ you? So ask questions about their procedures and cleanliness especially disease prevention. You can acquire diseases like Aids or hepatitis and many else from dirty needles. So never put your heath at stake and ask important questions.

3. Choose your piecing wisely.
Piercing has more of a lifetime consequence. Be certain that it can be done successfully because every body type is different. A perfect example is some people cannot have a tongue piercing done because of the orientation of their essential nerves and vessels in their tongue which can cause severe bleeding if punctured.

4. Think of its impact on your life.
Even though piercing is more acceptable nowadays it is still true that many employers wont hire you if you have piercings in your body. Many would look at you with a grin of discrimination.

5. Choose high quality jewelry.
Never go for design over quality, nor buy cheap and poor quality jewelry which can cause you infections. Find jewelries made of sterling silver, gold, titanium or surgical quality stainless steel. Only quality metals and high carbonated plastics are recommended for your piercing.

6. Keep it dry.
Keep your piercing away from saliva, sweat, chlorine water, or saltwater. These can penetrate to the wound and can cause you sickness and infections.

7. Keep it clean.
Piercing is a wound that needs to be healed and until it is fully recovered you must make sure that it is always clean.

8. Avoid putting on makeup.
If you have a piercing on your face avoid, putting makeup on the hole. Makeups have substances that can irritate and infect your wound.

9. Watch out our infections.
Signs of infections include discharge from the wound, pain, fever, swelling, redness, and general discomfort. If this happens, visit your doctor immediately.

10. Consult your physician if there is a problem.

What is Industrial Bar Piercing?

industrial bar piercing
First let us define what is body piercing, body piercing is creating an opening in the human body in which a jewelry may be worn in that hole, it is simply defined as the practice of puncturing or cutting a human body. It may sound so simple yet it sounds so painful right? Imagine cutting or making a hole in your body, doesn’t that hurt?

Now let us discuss a more specific kind of body piercing, the industrial bar piercing. What is this all about? Basically any two piercing holes that are connected with an extra long barbell is called the cartilage piercing of the ear or industrial piercing. There is actually a standard in industrial, the two helix peircings. Helix is the folded rim of skin and cartilage around most of the outer ear. It is the rounded and hard part of our ear. But, industrials can be a wide range of connected piercings.

Industrial piercing in North America, sometimes called as scaffold piercing in UK and IRL or construction piercing is, like what we have said earlier, any two pierced holes connected with a single straight piece of jewelry. For further explanation, however, it typically refers to a double perforation of the upper ear cartilage. Two peircings are made, one of which is in the anti-helix piercing, located fairly close to the head. The second one is located further down the cartilage on the opposite side of the ear and is called the helix piercing. From behind the ear a straight barbell is inserted trough the first piercing then travels diagonally across the front of the upper cartilage. After it goes through the second piercing, it is secured with a screw-on bead behind the second hole.

Because you created a hole in the human body more especially in the ear cartilage, it will be needing more time to heal. Healing process is no joke because it is typically being healed in three months and can last for a year until it is fully healed. The danger of course is that during the process of piercing and in the healing period, it is prone to infection. The barbell jewelry is worn during the healing period; it is usually 14g and is made with a sterile hollow piercing needle. Captive bead rings aka CBRs are sometimes used instead of the barbell itself and are exchanged with the barbell after the healing is complete. The use of these CBRs results in faster healing but this technique may cause improper alignment of the piercings when exchange after the healing. A flexible plastic tube can also be used and swapped for a metal bar when it is healed

Two or more industrial piercing on one ear creates four or more holes. Hence, it is often called a cage.

How Much Does Industrial Piercing Costs?

industrial piercing prices

Industrial piercing became well-liked since 1992 although it has already been popular during the ancient times. Industrial piercing is commonly mistaken just for the ears; but it can also be done in the lip, tongue, belly button and in many other parts of our body. Industrial piercing is two or more piercing that is connected together by a piece of jewelry.

Today having industrial piercing is a sign of expression, and for those who are in love with arts; they allow themselves to become a living masterpiece. As stated earlier industrial piercing is not really new, it is quite old. As a matter of fact, it has been used by ancient Egyptians— making it one of the oldest forms of self adornment. During those ancient times, it was a sign of position, wealth and power.

This article aims to make you understand industrial piercing and why it costs so much. Is it a reasonable price or not?

The price will differ depending on the shop that you go to and how popular your piercer is. You can use the shop finder at safepiercing.org to find a piercer of good reputation in your area, then give them a call or you can go directly to them to find out how much they charge, but the popular the piercer is; the higher they charge for their service for sure.
Industrial piercing is not an ordinary piercing and you wouldn’t want to have it done by non-professionals. Although you may find a deal for less by going to some local specials, always remember to be safe than sorry. Normally, industrial piercing costs from $40-$70 depending on the piercer and the barbell that you want. The barbell is always included in the deal to avoid the piercing from closing.

Prices could also vary depending on the area that you would like to be pierced on. For this, I advise you to ask questions and ask yourself not just once but many times before proceeding.

In order to make sure of proper healing, the barbell should be properly aligned because if you try to heal it with two separate rings and then change to one barbell later; the tendency is the piercings will have migrated so slightly—putting stress to the holes and will cause you to have piercings that you wont really like at all. To make sure that the barbell will stay in place, putting it at once is advisable.

Caring for Industrial Piercing

caring for industrial piercing

As we all know industrial piercing is not just an ordinary ear piercing, it needs more time to heal and more specific needs of care. Its healing time is six to twelve months, meaning more time and more attention needed. If you are worried about your sleeping position, you can use surgical tape while sleeping to protect the piercing.

Do not touch your piercing unless you are cleaning it. Our hands are basically the germs carrier, so do not touch or let others touch it while it is healing. You still have an open wound and unwashed hands carry bacteria and your piercing is in the condition where germs can penetrate below your skin and can cause an infection. Use only antibacterial soap in cleaning your healing piercing and only clean it twice a day. Showering is the most ideal time to do this. Here is the step by step process of cleaning it.

• Make sure to wash your hands first with antibacterial soap before touching the piercing
• Drip some plain water on your piercing.
• Put few drops of antibacterial soap on the piercing and clean it using cotton buds.
• Try to remove any crusted discharge from your skin and float it off the jewelry as well, loosen it using an antibacterial soap and cotton buds. Leave the antibacterial soap on the piercing for two minutes while carefully moving your piercing back and forth—allowing the soap to penetrate and disinfect it.
• Lastly, rinse it well with water and allow it to air dry thoroughly.

Avoid touching and removing your jewelry too often. It is not advisable to use alcohol swabs, betadine or hydrogen peroxide, cotton balls or cotton swabs to clean your piercing. Only antibacterial soaps will do. If symptoms like pain, redness and unusual discharge occur, consult your piercer or a physician because these may be due to infections. To maximize your healing, take vitamin C and zinc and lastly; wait until your piercing is healed until changing jewelry yourself. Until your piercing is fully healed, avoid contacting it to another person’s bodily fluid. There are a lot of sicknesses that you can acquire through bodily fluids when it penetrates your piercing, such as: Hepatitis A, B, and C, and HIV. Such viruses are present in the blood, saliva, semen, sweat and vaginal secretions of infected persons.
